2016 / 17 Class Placement Requests

2016 / 17 Class Placement Requests

Later this Spring we will begin the process of building classes for the upcoming school year. We welcome input from parents outlining the educational reasons for a class placement request.

Requests must be in writing to Mr. Thomas by Friday, May 20th

(You may also submit your request via email to srthomas@sd61.bc.ca)

Your request should address the specific needs of your child (e.g. Structured environment, social relationships, etc.) rather than placement with a specific teacher. Class organizations as indicated are subject to change as are teaching assignments. Please consider the following when writing your request.

Pursuant to School Act B.C. Regulation 265/89 Section 5 (7)(b) and (c), and the Agreement between the Board of Education of the Greater Victoria School District and the Greater Victoria Teachers Association Articles 2.1,2.2, and 2.3, the following process shall be utilized annually to determine the placement of students in classes.

School Organization:

After the annual staffing has been allocated to the school for the coming year, the principal in consultation with the professional staff will decide the tentative school organization for the following year. Many factors are considered in determining this organization, including: the number of students at each grade level, class size limits, needs of individual students, overall composition of classes.

Placement of Students:

In the later part of each school year, students will be temporarily organized into class groups for the next year. It must be understood that these groups may need to be altered during the first part of September to accommodate the unexpected movement of students during the summer. Each student will be considered individually and each class will be considered as a unit. Every effort will be made to place each student in the most appropriate situation academically, socially and emotionally in the larger context of the needs of all children. The following factors will be considered:

  • specific learning strengths, needs and styles
  • behavioural needs
  • social/emotional needs including placement with a friend
  • male/female balance
  • siblings
  • effort, achievement and independence
  • groupings appropriate for the best learning environment for all
  • age range
  • dynamics between children
